Filigree & Shadow

Where fragrances become an art of emotions

Filigree & Shadow

About Us

Welcome to Filigree & Shadow, where the art of fragrance meets innovation. Founded in 2013, the name Filigree & Shadow emanates from a twice-borrowed reference to the song by Fever Tree.

Our Story

I am James Elliott: the Nose (le nez) and self-described “Supercollider” of this fragrance house. I am a self-taught perfumer with a passion for crafting exquisite scents that captivate the senses and tell a unique olfactory story. My fragrance journey began in 2011, fueled by an insatiable curiosity and a love for the intricate world of perfumery.

In December 2015, I took my first steps into the world of perfumery, releasing my inaugural collection of natural perfumes. It was a moment of personal triumph and marked the beginning of a fragrant adventure that has continued to evolve.

Pioneering Natural Perfumery

In February 2016, I introduced my creations directly to the public, and it didn’t take long for fragrance enthusiasts in Seattle to take notice. In 2017, the late Robert Herrmann, a respected fragrance critic who reviewed perfumes for ÇaFleureBon, described my natural perfumes as “ethereal and complex,” recognizing my ability to stand out in the industry.

Pushing Boundaries with Synthetics

In 2018, I expanded my horizons by incorporating synthetic and natural materials into my fragrances. This innovative approach garnered the attention of Fragrantica editors and further solidified my commitment to pushing the boundaries of scent creation.

A Shift Towards Accessibility

In 2020, I made a significant change by transitioning to water-based perfumes. This shift was driven by a desire to create affordable fragrances that could be enjoyed by people around the world without the shipping restrictions often associated with alcohol-based perfumes.

Our Commitment

At Filigree & Shadow, I am committed to crafting fragrances that not only smell beautiful but also tell a story. My journey has been marked by creativity, innovation, and a dedication to producing scents that resonate with individuals everywhere.

Thank you for joining me on this fragrant adventure. I look forward to sharing my passion for perfumery with you and the world.
